College presents multiple challenges as students transition into adulthood. These include:
- Managing expectations
- Budget
- Socialization
- Work
- Study habits
- Drug/alcohol use
- Relationships
- Sexuality
- Motivation
- Health/wellness
- Diet and nutrition
- Sports
- Sharing space
- Greek life
- Time management
- ADLs
- Making safe friends
- Academic etiquette
- Body image
- Managing bad things (overdose, rape/unwanted sex, accidents, arrests, dui)
- Roommate negotiation
- Emotional turmoil of young adulthood
- Transportation
- Separation from family and home
Students with mental illness and substance use disorders are particularly challenged in these areas as a result of stress vulnerability, cognitive deficits, and emotional dysregulation.
